2019 RisingSTAR Award Winner To Foster Inclusive Automation

The RisingSTAR Award was introduced to help stimulate innovation and encourage new ideas in the software testing industry through support and mentorship. It is about encouraging new voices and developing future leaders in testing. The winner of the RisingSTAR Award receives mentorship from many of the most influential testing minds who have come together as a supporting group to help develop the winning ideas for the benefit of the wider testing community.

Entries for the 2019 RisingSTAR Award were encouraged from across the globe. Testers and quality professionals submitted a wide range of potential ideas which were narrowed down to four finalists; Brendan Connolly (United States), Luca Finzi Contini (Italy), Lokesh Gulechha (UK) and Wayne Rutter (UK). Following voting by the panel of RisingSTAR supporters, Brendan Connolly, Senior Quality Engineer at Procore Technologies in Santa Barbara, California has been announced as the 2019 RisingSTAR Award winner.

Brendan always knew he wanted to program, having grown up on 80’s 8bit video games, he dreamt of writing his own. When he first started in testing, it was all about manual checking, tools were limited, and waterfall was the default. He found the introduction of Agile a breath of fresh air and used his development skills to improve his testing which began his mission to help make testers’ lives easier. Brendan regularly contributes to open source projects and is passionate about testing at all levels.

The 2019 RisingSTAR Award winner describes his idea as “Inclusive Automation – to foster, support and promote automation that integrates exploration, collaboration, monitoring/observability, reporting and ultimately the human tester into a holistic solution to help teams succeed in the agile/devops world.” Brendan believes that automation in its current state is a highly exclusionary activity. It excludes tests that don’t fit well into the confines of headless execution. It excludes those testers that cannot code, encouraging a class divide between ‘manual’ testers and SDETs or automation engineers. It excludes the monitoring and observability data that teams are increasingly relying upon.

In his acceptance speech at the 2019 EuroSTAR Software Testing Awards night, Brendan shared that he “would like to build, demonstrate, encourage and enable automation that draws people and teams together. Providing a holistic approach to an automation enabled testing strategy. Ultimately driving a healthier and more robust approach to automated testing that is inclusive of the diverse range of team skills, while shifting automation from something testers run towards something testers use. Helping teams to reduce the number of expensive and brittle end to end tests and have a deeper focus on tools that facilitate quality.”

To learn more about how Brendan plans to do this, see his winning entry on EuroSTAR Huddle. Over the coming year, as the 2019 RisingSTAR Winner, Brendan will be provided with an ongoing platform on the EuroSTAR Huddle online community, with regular updates on his progress as he receives mentorship and develops his ‘Inclusive Automation’ idea. He will also have an opportunity to present the overall concept and updates at the 2020 EuroSTAR Software Testing Conference in Antwerp, Belgium.

As we look forward to 2020, the RisingSTAR Award team supported by EuroSTAR Conferences, James Lyndsay and Bart Knaack, invite you to submit your idea for consideration. The testing community is built on powerful ideas, and contributions from within the community are key to its future development. Great ideas can come at any time and to get your testing ideas flowing, the 2020 RisingSTAR Award is now open for entry. If you have a great idea that could change the testing world, don’t wait, submit now! For more details see the RisingSTAR Award entry page on EuroSTAR Huddle.

Blockchain Framework wins inaugural RisingSTAR Award

The RisingSTAR Award, supported by EuroSTAR Conferences, James Lyndsay and Bart Knaack, was created to stimulate innovation and encourage new ideas in the software testing industry. The RisingSTAR brings together many of the most influential testing minds as a supporting group to help develop winning ideas for the overall benefit of the industry.

It has been six months since entries opened for the first ever RisingSTAR Award. The submissions were narrowed down to six finalists spanning five countries Biju Abraham (India), Brendan Connolly (United States), Rami Dahmosh (Israel), Roman Iovlev (Russia), Eric Jimmink (Netherlands) and Sanne Visser (Netherlands). Following voting by the panel of thirty-two highly respected RisingSTAR supporters, Sanne Visser of NS has been announced as the 2018 RisingSTAR Award winner.

Sanne Visser – 2018 RisingSTAR Award winner

Sanne originally started in testing in a consultancy environment gaining exposure to many different industries and techniques. Increasing her competencies, Sanne was awarded her Scrum Master certification shortly after joining Dutch Rail 6 years ago. Being part of such a large company has enabled Sanne to move across a hugely varied range of projects and led to her uncovering the need to raise awareness of blockchain technology. Following her initial interest in cryptocurrency, Sanne noticed that that many testers were not validating blockchain elements of their systems, and started to focus on how to test blockchain. There are currently relatively few Blockchain software projects so Sanne then began
lobbying internally for related projects to gain more knowledge. This led to her winning idea!

As described by Sanne “my primary goal is to enable people without any IT or Blockchain knowledge to understand the most basic principles so that they can ask the right questions before considering a blockchain solution. Most coverage of blockchain in the media is about cryptotrading, scams and bitcoin exchange rates. It misrepresents the technology and overhypes the risk that a blockchain solution is vulnerable to scamming from third parties. This is the first part of my mission, to inform. To break down complex technology into terms anyone can understand.”

Following this, Sanne aims to develop a testing framework for dealing with Blockchain-based applications as well as forming a Blockchain testing group to share knowledge to benefit the entire testing community. Each RisingSTAR supporter has committed to support the winner with a half-day of their time. Sanne will use that support to help her develop a workshop with a demo-blockchain environment, allowing her to teach testers about the technology, and to let them experiment with ways it might be tested. As the 2018
RisingSTAR winner, Sanne will be provided with an ongoing platform on the EuroSTAR Huddle online community with updates on her progress as well as an opportunity to present the overall concept and updates at next year’s EuroSTAR Software Testing Conference in Prague.

Beyond recognising and rewarding great ideas, the RisingSTAR Award is about encouraging new voices and developing future leaders in testing. Great ideas can come at any time and to get ideas flowing, the 2019 RisingSTAR Award is now open for entry. If you have a great idea that could change the testing world, don’t wait, submit now! Candidates will be shortlisted next April.

QASymphony Announces Quality Excellence Award Winners at Quality Jam 2018

ATLANTA, April 11, 2018 – QASymphony, a leader in enterprise software testing, announces the winners of the QASymphony Quality Excellence Awards. The awards were presented at Quality Jam, QASymphony’s annual customer conference, to QA teams that have demonstrated excellence, efficiency, innovation and advocacy in software quality.

“I would like to congratulate the winners of the 2018 QASymphony Quality Excellence Awards –  they were selected from hundreds of candidates and represent the best of the best. Each of the winning enterprises were cross-functionally aligned around prioritizing software quality and they set a standard of excellence for other teams to emulate,” said QASymphony CEO Dave Keil.

Winners were designated in the following three categories:

The QA Champion Award recognizes a team who has excelled in championing the importance of QA and software quality across teams, throughout their organization or to the C-suite. This year’s QA Champion Award goes to two outstanding teams: The QA team at Office Depot and the QA team at Global Payments.

The QA team at Office Depot has been a critical component of the retailer’s initiative to create an omni-channel shopping experience in stores and across devices. The QA team at Office Depot does a fantastic job promoting the importance of software quality to executive leadership. In turn, leadership has prioritized software quality and enabled QA to play a key role in the company’s digital transformation. To maintain a seamless customer experience, Office Depot needs to consistently push up-to-date product information across multiple digital platforms, from websites to web apps to point-of-sale systems, and ensure each one is bug-free and performing as expected. The company’s QA team developed a strategy to streamline testing across technologies, leveraging qTest as a unified platform for collaborating with developers, centrally managing test data, and analyzing application quality. The team leverages executive-level dashboards in qTest Insights to share key metrics with executives, which helps them continually optimize application quality and better engage with customers across digital channels.

The QA team at Global Payments sets key goals that align with the business strategy in annual planning sessions. The team reports progress regularly to executive leadership across business organizations, up to the board level. Key metrics, including zero production defects, are tracked in qTest Insights. The Test Engineering and Quality Assurance teams are engaged at every step in the software delivery pipeline, from inception to design to delivery. The team continuously engages partners in the business to champion quality assurance principles and test engineering practices, and code isn’t deployed into production without QA acceptance and business signoff. To ensure that application delivery is a partnership, Global Payments has established a cross-functional QA Center of Excellence, which helps build trust and reinforce partnerships with development to continuously communicate, collaborate, coordinate and deliver great software that successfully processes and settles millions of payment transactions daily.

The Collaboration Award recognizes a team who has excelled in ensuring developer-tester alignment, via workflow optimization, process and tool alignment, and a collaborative spirit. This year’s Collaboration Award goes to Sterling Talent Solutions.

The QA team at Sterling Talent Solutions realized recently that their test management solution did not provide the necessary integration and visibility that was needed to support agile teams. They were hacking their existing QA toolset to make it fit within the new process and spending too much time communicating QA progress to other stakeholders. Recognizing an opportunity to streamline development and testing, QA leaders requested feedback from various stakeholders across the software development lifecycle to learn what they needed most. The answer was a tool with a robust integration with Jira and Confluence, so that developers and product owners could easily keep track of QA progress and receive notifications when it was time for them to step in. After implementing qTest, the team is more closely aligned – product owners have a clear view of what tests are being run, scrum masters are able to manage and report on defects, and leadership is able to see the quality of the application at a requirement level. In support of their continuous test integration, the team has developed a new test framework that leverages qTest APIs to integrate test management directly with their test automation. The team plans to incorporate qTest Pulse and qTest Launch into their strategy in the near future.

The Innovation Award recognizes a team who has innovated the testing process at their organization by leveraging some of the latest techniques and tools. This year’s Innovation Award goes to the QA Research, Development and Support (RDS) team at Life Time, Inc.

The QA RDS team at Life Time Inc. realized they needed an innovative solution for managing all types of tests after moving in a new direction with test automation. The Jira test management add-on they were using was no longer sufficient for keeping track of all types of tests (automated, manual, unit, etc.) each week, which the Life Time QA team was using. The team participated in QASymphony’s qTest Launch beta program and will now roll out the product to centrally manage automation across all of the team’s test machines.
