Redgate boosts team productivity in its SQL coding and formatting tool, SQL Prompt

Cambridge UK, Thursday, 7 November – To help developers increase the speed and quality of their SQL coding, enhance efficiency, and take advantage of the latest improvements in SQL Server, Redgate has released a major upgrade for its most popular tool, SQL Prompt.

Many individual developers and an increasing number of teams have already discovered the value of SQL Prompt, both as a coding productivity tool and as a way to encourage collaboration in DevOps. Rather than having to work out the correct syntax the hard way, SQL Prompt autocompletes code in SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) and Visual Studio, and takes care of formatting. It also encourages teams to implement and share good SQL coding standards and practices, and promotes code reuse, improving the quality of the code that reaches production systems

A new ranking algorithm in SQL Prompt v10 makes the code completion feature even smarter. As developers type code, it now gives them the most likely autocomplete suggestions first, based on what code has already been typed, and suggestions that have been used previously.

Early feedback has already been very favorable. As Piotr Lipski, Business Intelligence Consultant at BearingPoint, comments: “After enabling the ranked option, I am getting the right thing on the very top of the IntelliSense list almost every time. Not sure what voodoo your developers put behind this but it saves me a lot of scrolling and clicking.”

To improve the quality of coding, another new feature in SQL Prompt also auto-fixes errors in code. As users write code, SQL Prompt runs static code analysis in the background, checking the code for compliance with its built-in set of rules, and highlighting potential code issues and pitfalls. For rules where code simply needs to be corrected, SQL Prompt will auto-fix the code and remove the issue.

This is especially useful when reviewing legacy code that needs to be brought up to standard. By cutting the time required to deal with trivial issues, it allows teams to focus on the more serious ones which might cause performance, reliability or instability problems.

And in response to user feedback, two of the most popular requests have been addressed by enhancing the tab history feature in the SSMS version of SQL Prompt. Many developers have multiple tabs open in SSMS, particularly when they are resolving complex problems. The feature already lets users save, preview, rename and restore tabs. It now allows tabs that contain code that is needed often to be bookmarked, and groups tabs by date to make them easier to find.

Finally, any tool that strives to help teams adopt SQL standards and current best practices can only do so if it adapts continually to support advances in the underlying database platform, SQL Server. SQL Prompt 10 supports all of the significant T-SQL enhancements introduced in SQL Server 2019, the release of which was announced at Microsoft Ignite on 4 November. Users can now, for example, assign data sensitivity classifications to their columns using the new ADD SENSITIVITY CLASSIFICATION command.

Existing users of SQL Prompt can start using the new functionality immediately by updating to the latest version using the Check for Updates link in the Help menu. New users can explore the feature by downloading a fully-functional trial version of the software from the Redgate website. Once installed, SQL Prompt will appear in the standard menu of SSMS or Visual Studio and can be used just like any other feature of the IDE.

ProLabs high-quality transceivers receive NEBS certification

Tustin, California, US November 5 – ProLabs, a global leader in optical networking and connectivity solutions, today announced its completion of the Network Equipment Building System (NEBS) compliance test through global industry leader in quality assurance testing, Intertek.

ProLabs SFP, XFP and QSFP transceivers have undergone NEBS testing criteria for standards GR-63-CORE and GR-1089-CORE. The compliance test involves testing the products in extremities to ensure that they can resist maximal temperature, vibration and humidity. The test also measures and validates improved space planning, simplified installation and increased energy efficiency.

“Through our longstanding commitment to US service providers, responsible for building and maintaining connectivity for our communities, it was important to invest in the most thorough and stringent testing methods that certify our products as safe and reliable,” said Patrick Beard, Chief Technology Officer at ProLabs. “This allows us to further drive partner and public confidence in our end to end network infrastructure solutions.”

NEBS compliance refers to the conformance of a network product to the requirements of the NEBS standard. Compliance to this standard indicates that a network product or telecommunications equipment performs at its optimum capacity.

NEBS is made up of levels that refer to different aspects of equipment management and increased operational requirements. NEBS level 1 allows for a broader range of scenarios and NEBS level 3 requires that the equipment meets the requirements of specific GR-63-CORE and GR-1089-CORE standards that anticipate long-term network needs. Telecom companies use these standards to evaluate the solvency of equipment systems for continual service.

The North American telecom industry requires component solution providers to be NEBS compliant in order to ensure network integrity, compatibility and safety. The combination of rapid network expansion and the experience of carriers in managing their infrastructure during extreme weather events is likely to only increase the demand for NEBS-compliant devices. As those standards continue to evolve, they will become more demanding.

In addition to being NEBS compliant, ProLabs’ product lines, including optical transceivers and high speed cabling, are also MSA, TAA, and RoHS compliant. All ProLabs’ products are rigorously tested and coded in its global, state-of-the-art facilities to ensure the highest levels of performance with 100% application testing in end-use conditions.

About ProLabs
ProLabs is the leading global provider of optical networking infrastructure solutions. For the past 20 years, ProLabs has delivered optical connectivity solutions that give its customers freedom, choice, and seamless interoperability.

By assuring higher standards for products, service, technology, and cost, the company is changing the mindset of data center and networking customers. ProLabs’ strength is in supplying solutions that are 100% OEM-compatible across more than 90 vendors and 20,000 systems.

ProLabs delivers global reach with innovative, cutting-edge solutions that are backed by a lifetime warranty, assuring the quality of every product sold and serviced. Redgate Software celebrates 20 years, half a billion dollars in sales, and 3.5 million users

Cambridge UK, Thursday 31 October 2019 – Redgate this month celebrated its 20th anniversary as a software company dedicated to creating advanced database development solutions. In that time, the company has grown from one product to a portfolio of over 30 related products, a single office in Cambridge UK to five around the world, and two staff to 400.

On the way, it has topped half a billion dollars in sales, 65% of which are in the USA, and more than 3.5 million users have actively used its products. Surprisingly in the tech sector, it has also resisted venture funding and remains a privately owned, debt-free company.

Founded in October 1999, Redgate released SQL Compare in December of the same year. The first ever product designed to compare the structures of SQL Server databases, it was an immediate success and has remained the industry standard for comparing and deploying databases.

That desire to create what Redgate calls ingeniously simple solutions to resolve the problems faced by database developers and administrators every day has been central to the company’s philosophy ever since. It now offers a complete portfolio of database DevOps products which have evolved over the years to keep pace with changes in the way databases are developed, with the latest solutions in areas like data masking and data cataloging.

The evolution in database development has been matched by a similar evolution in Redgate’s own software development approach. When SQL Compare was first being developed, the typical Analysis, Design, Implementation, Testing, Installation and Maintenance steps of the Waterfall model were used, and new versions were released every six months.

The 20 years since then have seen the adoption of Lean and Agile methodologies with, for example, scrum teams and sprints, Kanban boards and A3 processes becoming increasingly common in development teams. Redgate has adapted, updated and improved its own software development process to follow suit and teams now regularly release weekly and sometimes daily, with 1,295 releases already in 2019.

As Simon Galbraith, CEO and Co-Founder of Redgate comments: “What’s been fascinating for me personally is that we’ve all been on a journey over the last two decades. The whole industry is moving from big bang releases based on the features companies think users want to daily releases based on what users actually need. Database development has changed too, with the database now being included in DevOps and businesses needing to deliver value quicker while keeping data safe. This has become a boardroom issue and enterprises like BMW, Prudential, Aberdeen Standard Investments and PASS all now see the need for advanced database development solutions.”

Redgate’s R&D division, Foundry, continues to explore new areas and is currently developing Spawn, a multi-RDBMS Database as a Service platform, and a server estate management solution for proactively understanding, aligning, tracking and annotating data estates.

As Simon Galbraith concludes: “In many ways, database development has remained constant since 1999 and tools like SQL Compare are as relevant now as they were when they were launched. At the same time, developments like the cloud and increasingly stringent data protection regulations are bringing fresh challenges and we’ll continue to introduce new solutions to help enterprises address them over the next 20 years.”
