TestPlant granted three new UK patents

TestPlant, the maker of the eggPlant range of software quality tools, today announced that it has been granted three new patents by the Intellectual Property Office of the United Kingdom. The patents relate to TestPlant’s innovative, image-based approach to automating testing of software applications.

The three patents, which have also been filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, are:

  • Scaled image search, which allows eggPlant to test an application on different screen sizes, colors or rotations, without requiring new scripts to be created. This is highly relevant in today’s highly fragmented technology environments, particularly when it comes to testing mobile apps, which have to be run on devices with widely varying screen sizes and resolutions and often requires extensive work by test teams to account for such variations.
  • Retrain mode, which allows eggPlant to “retrain” itself when the testing environment changes. This is particularly well-suited to testing in agile development, when frequently changing web environments are a common occurrence.
  • Auto detect delay, which automatically detects and compensates for the delay between an operation and the causal result, such as when clicking an action and receiving a response message on-screen. In test automation, these delays can often result in false alerts, which take time. This feature saves test teams time by ensuring that scripts are robust and error-free.

“These patents keep TestPlant at the forefront of innovation in the software quality market, and help set the eggPlant products apart when it comes to testing in agile and mobile environments,” said Antony Edwards, CTO, TestPlant. “Businesses are under pressure to reduce the time-to-market of their software applications and this has led to the rise of agile development, but the increasing fragmentation of devices and platforms presents a significant challenge. These patents allow eggPlant to provide significant efficiencies when testing software in today’s highly fragmented technology landscape.”

TestPlant produces the eggPlant range of software quality tools, which tests and monitors the delivery of software applications on any device, as well as across data centers and networks. The company has seen rapid international adoption of its software testing products. TestPlant’s products are used by hundreds of enterprise customers across the United States, Europe, China and Japan, and support customers in sectors ranging from financial services, telecoms, retail and healthcare to automotive, travel and media.

Why your customers prefer high performing E-commerce websites?

During the ecommerce software development lifecycle, ISVs need to perform continuous build testing (essentially performance testing) and complete product testing to find and fix performance issues as early as possible that ultimately improves product time to market.
Today, E-commerce businesses demand high-performance web applications to seamlessly run their offerings and reap revenues. Since, customers do not wait patiently if the site crashes the reason could be failed to implement pre-launch test for their website with tens of thousands of users.

For ecommerce websites, major performance issues can include slow page loading and an incapability of handling real-time high volume traffic whilst high levels of traffic can cause some sites to crash. Performance and stability failures directly impact sales statistics and loss of money for the ecommerce businesses.

The main objective of testing e-commerce applications is to be ļ¬nding all performance issues and bottlenecks during each phase of the application development life cycle.
Testing an e-commerce application for performance is become very crucial, since potentially-Commerce websites break down because of performance when visitors wait for the site to load.

A site that takes more than three seconds to load will not generate revenue for the business owners. Mostly, the performance issues occur due to poor designing, host, non-optimized images, or sites loaded with multiple widgets and gizmos. On the other hand, the usage of mobile devices that has internet is rapidly increasing. People are increasingly using smart phones for more convenient shopping online. (Mobile Now Accounts for 50.3% of All Ecommerce Traffic. Source: http://ow.ly/PdHqw ). So, the same mobile app is also needs testing for the performance. Despite availability, most worst performing eCommerce sites fall due to performance which directly impacts business bottom line.

More than seventy percent of the people visiting the ecommerce websites are experiencing worst performance issues and the business owners are facing stability problems of their websites through which they are unable to generate revenue as expected at the peak times.

Therefore, there is need to understand the importance of performance testing e-commerce applications and the challenges involved in testing and building a robust and high performing e-commerce application.

E-Commerce ISVs and development firms should deploy testing for their each and every build. Because, the end-user always look for a precise and reliable services and does not think of what is running below the surface of an application.

Usually, e-commerce applications are developed with strict deadlines and they need rigorous testing which is a tedious activity therefore, streamlining testing process is essential. Due to the complexity of e-commerce applications it is difficult for the testing team with fewer resources to conduct performance testing as many as times they want to detect its performance level.

E-Commerce ISVs and development firms that maintain in-house software testing constituency for testing the applications may not meet the needs of the modern day technology growth and testing types. Since, it could be very expensive on a long term process; it is sometimes very similar with the outsourcing model as well. As a matter of fact, inadequate testing always leads to loss of business reputation or commercial image.
“Performance: The constant increase in the number of application users, may degrade the performance and become very slow especially during the holiday/ shopping season. ”
