Summit Tech to Demonstrate 360° Video Calling into Virtual Reality Headsets at MWC

Montreal, Canada– February 2015 – Summit Tech will demonstrate 360° video calling with Virtual Reality (VR) headsets at Mobile World Congress next week. This innovative form of communication allows people to see, and look around in an immersive 360° view of the place they are calling, as well as share the VR experience with others in real-time.

The new system from Summit Tech provides the means to connect Voice over LTE (VoLTE) and Video over LTE (ViLTE) calls directly into Oculus Rift Virtual Reality (VR) headsets. The 360° video calls are streamed directly from GIROPTIC’s soon-to-be-launched 360cam. The GIROPTIC 360cam, which will officially launch this spring, is the first mass-market consumer 360° camera able to send real-time content to a mobile phone.

Summit Tech’s VoLTE & ViLTE Virtual Reality works with existing industry standards including wireless operators’ IMSnetworks supporting IR.94 video and enriched calling. On supported IMS networks, the 360° video stream connects users equipped with readily available IMS/RCS based smartphones. It routes the call through the wireless operator’s network and overlays IR.94 video calls into the VR session. In addition to connecting with VR headsets, the 360° video calls can also be streamed as a Video Share session with RCS enabled Android, iOS and Microsoft smartphones or downloadable apps for tablets and PCs.

“In a market which has become resigned to innovation coming from OTT players, we have come up with a whole new way for wireless operators to retake the initiative,” commented Alido Di Giovanni, President of Summit Tech. “It is time for operators to better leverage their IMS deployments and provide something that can truly excite consumers again, beyond just getting faster Internet or cheaper data packages. With IMS, why stop at basic Enriched Calling – delivering truly immersive experiences is one of the many ways they can begin to amaze.”

OMA Bridges the Gap between SDOs and Developers with Revolutionary Toolkit

San Diego- CA – February 18, 2015– The Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) today announced they will launch their OMA Developer Toolkit at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain March 2-5, 2015. The toolkit is the first of its kind from a Standards Development Organization (SDO) and addresses the need to bridge the gap between SDOs and the application developer creating apps for use over wireless networks.

There are an increasing number of professionals within the SDO community that believe standards development processes must evolve to meet the needs of the new and ever emerging mobile ecosystem, including app developers. With this in mind OMA has produced a developer toolkit that will dramatically improve a specification’s ease of use for developers. The toolkit is designed to give developers the tools they need to easily and efficiently create innovative products and services based on OMA specifications and APIs.

“Standards fuel the development and implementation of technologies that influence and transform the way we work, play and communicate. The OMA toolkit is designed to enable the app developer to deliver apps using OMA specifications more easily and in a timely manner, while listening to the needs of the developer community,” comments Joaquin Prado, Director of Technical Programs, OMA.

The OMA Developer Toolkit provides tools such as a client/server emulator, an editor to create profile data, a GitHub code and specifications repository, a lab kit of examples of how to use standards, a sandbox server for testing implementations, a user community and a listing of open source projects based on standards.

Joaquin Prado, Director of Technical Programs, Open Mobile Alliance will be hosting exclusive events for all members of the press at this year’s Mobile World Congress, where he will demo the toolkit and showcase how OMA is bridging the gap between standards organisations and developers. The Encrypted Internet: Teclo Networks See Encrypted Mobile Data Explosion

The traffic share of encrypted data is over 30% across a range of mobile operators

Zurich, Switzerland February 18th, 2015 – Teclo Networks, a leader in TCP/IP data optimization, announced today that it has noticed a rapid increase in the amount of encrypted data sent over mobile networks. Encrypted data has now grown to more than 30% of the total traffic carried over a mobile network, up from just a few percent two years ago.
Although major content providers such as Facebook, YouTube, Google and Twitter already encrypt most of their data, Teclo expects the growth in encrypted traffic to continue as more content providers follow suit. This growth is good news for both end users and content providers, with encrypted protocols like HTTPS, HTTP/2 and SPDY providing additional privacy and security.

However, for operators, encrypted data causes a number of problems. Back when almost all data was unencrypted and transferred over HTTP, operators built their networks and regulators built their laws on the assumption that data was transferred in the clear. It could be cached, probed, checked, compressed and copied. Since none of that manipulation works on encrypted traffic, it bypasses the existing HTTP-based infrastructure.

The S-Series from Teclo Networks is a TCP optimization solution that accelerates the transfer of TCP traffic, which comprises more than 90% of all – encrypted and unencrypted – traffic in mobile data networks. With TCP optimization, operators can improve their customer experience and speed up both data uploads and downloads by up to 60% with servers installed only in the core network.

Jane Walerud CEO of Teclo Networks said: “In just a few years we have noticed a seismic shift in the data we optimize. In four years, we have gone from 3% of data being encrypted to now more than 30%. This trend is rapidly accelerating, and we are now seeing operators looking for solutions that are able to optimize both encrypted and unencrypted data.”
Teclo Networks will also be demonstrating its TCP/IP optimization solution the S-Series at this year’s Mobile World Congress (Hall 7 Stand 7 G11) from the 2nd-5th March.
